TYCE · THE GLOSSARY — GYM CODE
LOVE KILLS
γλυκύπικρον · glykýpikron
ORIGIN
Sappho, fragment 130, around 600 BC. She coined a word for love: γλυκύπικρον, ‘sweet-bitter’. In that order: the sweet first, the bitter afterwards.
MEANING
What we love most is what costs us most.
Peter Flötner, Cupid Complaining to Venus, c. 1540–1546 — The Cleveland Museum of Art. Public domain.
We usually translate it as ‘bittersweet’, reversing Sappho's order. She deliberately put the sugar first: we do not distrust what begins well. Twenty-six centuries later, no one has offered a better definition.
Ask anyone in a gym what this sport has taken from them: weekends, joints, relationships, money. Then ask whether they are stopping. The answer is always the same, and it is never reasonable.
WHAT TYCE TAKES FROM IT
This is not a warning; it is an observation. Things that cost nothing transform no one.
THE SWEET FIRST, THE BITTER AFTERWARDS
