THE VICTOR WHO KEEPS HIS WORD — What you do once you have won.
Salah ad-Dîn (Saladin), Sultan of Egypt and Syria — 1137–1193. After his victory at Hattin in July 1187, Salah ad-Dîn retook Jerusalem in October. Contrary to the military customs of the period, the city was not subjected to massacre: a negotiated surrender arranged the inhabitants' ransom and departure.
This is the situation carried by the Salah ad-Dîn (Saladin) capsule from the CULTURE OF WAR collection: not a tribute, but a mirror. The piece bears the inscription “SI DIEU M'ACCORDE LA VICTOIRE, LA GÉNÉROSITÉ SERA MA VENGEANCE”, the capsule's motto.
