Japanese White Oak, known as Shirakashi, Shirogashi, or Shirokashi (French transcription variations), and scientifically named "Quercus acutissima," is a tree native to southern Japan (Kyushu, Shikoku). Unlike European oaks, this Japanese oak floats on water, is moderately hard, and therefore more shock-resistant, making it an ideal wood for Bokken manufacturing.
